SEI news today centers on a regulatory step. SEI perpetual futures have been certified by a CFTC-regulated exchange, Sei Network said on October 16, 2026. The contracts settle in US dollars, trade around the clock and never expire.

Sei says the token now joins BTC, ETH, SOL and XRP among assets with perpetual futures on CFTC-regulated venues. That is the project's own claim.
The certification itself dates to October 8, when the CFTC filing record lists the Sei (SEI) Perpetual Futures Contract as certified. The exchange is North American Derivatives Exchange, which trades as OG.com Markets.
"Certified" here means self-certified. Under CFTC Regulation 40.2(a), an exchange can state that a product follows the rules without waiting for a formal approval vote. That differs from the CFTC approving a contract, as it did for a bitcoin perpetual on May 29, 2026.
The exchange argues SEI is a digital commodity with a deep spot market, so the faster route applies. It also posted a self-certification notice on its site that day.
The filing describes a USD-settled perpetual index future under the symbol SEI-USD-Perp.
Funding payments keep positions tied to the spot price. Longs pay shorts when the contract trades above the index, and the reverse applies below it. Funding runs in eight-hour windows ending at 00:00, 08:00 and 16:00 UTC.
The reference price is the CF Sei-Dollar Spot Rate, administered by CF Benchmarks. Contracts are margined and must be accessed through a CFTC-registered futures commission merchant, or a connected introducing broker.
The filing named October 12, 2026 as the intended listing date. The documents reviewed show no first-trade data or open interest, so live trading activity remains unconfirmed.
Sei posted a second update on October 16, about three hours after the first. It said activity on the network rose 51% in 24 hours, citing Chainspect data. The post did not say what drove the rise.

The same post said Giga is on the way. The SEI Giga upgrade is Sei's planned performance overhaul, and no launch date was given.
On SEI price, exchange data from October 14 showed the token near $0.065, with daily volume around $57 million. That reading predates the announcement, so it shows no market reaction yet.
Three SEI ETF applications, from REX-Osprey, Canary Capital and 21Shares, remain pending with the SEC. The sources reviewed confirm no approval and no decision date.
A futures listing and an ETF are separate products under separate regulators. The CFTC oversees futures exchanges, while the SEC reviews fund applications. How the SEC handles these filings fits into wider crypto ETF regulation developments, where timelines can change.
The data suggests the filing matters more than the headline. Key signals include first-day volume, open interest, funding rates and any CFTC response to the self-certification route.
The main risks are thin liquidity and limited access. Access runs through futures brokers, which narrows the audience.
The main uncertainty remains timing. The listing date, the SEI Giga upgrade and the SEI ETF decisions all depend on parties outside Sei Network. The 51% activity gain is also a single 24-hour reading, and no source ties it to the derivatives news.
Regulated crypto perpetuals have moved from offshore venues toward US exchanges this year, a shift that keeps appearing in crypto news today.
SEI perpetual futures now have a CFTC filing behind them. What remains open is actual trading. In SEI crypto news this week, the filing is the verified part, and later crypto news updates may add volume data.
