We pulled together every piece officially listed on z.cash/ecosystem, plus a few community projects worth knowing, and laid it out plainly below.
Zcash (ZEC) is a cryptocurrency built around privacy. It launched in 2016 through Electric Coin Co., using zero-knowledge cryptography to let people send shielded ZEC without exposing sender, receiver, or amount on-chain.
Bitcoin's ledger is fully public. Zcash's isn't, not by default anyway.
Users can choose between transparent addresses, which work a lot like Bitcoin, and shielded addresses, which hide transaction details using zk-SNARKs. That's the core mechanism.
Here's the thing though: Zcash itself is just the protocol and the coin. Everything built to store it, trade it, or move it across chains, that's the ecosystem covered below.

Some names show up again and again across the Zcash-ecosystem projects list. A few are worth knowing before you dig into categories.
Electric Coin Co. built and still maintains core client software. The Zcash Foundation, a nonprofit, stewards independent tools like the Zebra node and governance processes.
ZecHub runs as a volunteer-driven education hub. It co-manages community resources alongside the Foundation.
Shielded Labs works on protocol-level privacy research. The Financial Privacy Foundation supports broader advocacy work around financial privacy rights.
None of these projects are interchangeable. But together, they cover research, funding, education, and software, the four legs the ecosystem stands on.
Zcash-wallets are where most users actually start. Pick the wrong one, and shielded features barely matter.
Zashi (also called Zodl) is a self-custody, shielded-first wallet built by the same team behind ZODL. According to the official listing, it supports CrossPay, Flexa payments, and Keystone hardware integration.
Other listed options include Edge, YWallet, Nighthawk, Noir Wallet, Vizor, Zingo!, and Unstoppable. Keystone offers an air-gapped hardware option for people who want keys offline entirely.
Not every wallet shields by default. Check that detail before you move funds.
Zcash exchanges vary a lot by region and by what they'll actually let you withdraw.
Coinbase, Kraken, and Gemini list ZEC and appear in the official ecosystem directory as custodial platforms. Binance lists it too, though the project has flagged issues with shielded-address deposits on Binance specifically, worth checking before you send funds there.
KuCoin, Poloniex, Changelly, ChangeNOW, and StealthEx round out the trading options, some custodial, some non-custodial swap services.
Availability shifts by jurisdiction. What's listed for one country's users won't always show up for another's.
This is where the Its infrastructure actually lives, the software that keeps blocks moving and nodes talking to each other.
Zebra is the Zcash Foundation's independent, consensus-compatible full-node implementation, written from scratch rather than forked from zcashd. Zebra is steadily replacing zcashd, which the project has marked for deprecation.
zecd is a shielded-first wallet server that speaks Bitcoin Core's JSON-RPC dialect, useful for exchanges and services migrating off older tooling. Zakura is a newer, high-performance full node offering faster chain sync.
Developers get official Zcash developer tools too: SDKs, a reference wallet app for testing, and full documentation at zcash.readthedocs.io. zec.rocks runs private lightwalletd endpoints for fast, global access.
The Zcash DeFi side is smaller than wallets or exchanges. But it's growing, and it's where shielded ZEC meets other chains.
SwapKit integrates Zcash as both a source and destination chain. THORSwap, powered by SwapKit, works as a multi-chain DEX aggregator that includes ZEC pairs.
Houdini Swap positions itself around private, cross-chain swaps. LeoDex offers a non-custodial interface built specifically to swap, shield, and spend ZEC.
Near Intents recently added permissionless cross-chain swaps for Zcash, based on community updates shared through the official Community Hub. ZECpad, meanwhile, is a pre-launch, privacy-first launchpad built for Zcash-native tokens.
Start with what you're actually trying to do. That question changes everything else.
Want privacy first? Pick a shielded-by-default wallet like Zashi, Keystone, or Vizor, not one that defaults to transparent addresses.
Want to trade? Compare exchange availability in your country before assuming a listing applies to you.
Building something? Start with Zebra or the official SDKs, not zcashd, since it's being phased out.
No ecosystem is perfect. It has real strengths and real gaps.

Quick update, as of September 2026 (UTC).
The Zcash Foundation shipped Zebra 2.2.0, a routine but meaningful infrastructure release. FROST 2.1.0, the threshold-signature tool, also rolled out.
Zcash Shielded Assets (ZSAs) got approved as part of the NU7 network upgrade, a big deal for anyone building tokenized assets on Zcash. ChainSafe added PCZT support to WebzJS, letting web apps handle partially created shielded transactions more easily.
Registration opened for ZconVI, the community's annual conference. And Orchard, the newer shielded pool, has now surpassed Sapling in total ZEC held, a milestone the community had been watching for a while.
The Zcash ecosystem covers a lot more ground than most people expect. Wallets, exchanges, node software, cross-chain swaps, grant programs, it's all connected.
Understanding the pieces makes the whole thing less intimidating. You don't need every tool. You just need the right one for what you're doing.
The ecosystem keeps shifting too, new releases, new integrations, new grant recipients. That's normal for a project still actively building out its infrastructure.
