$PI is trading at $0.08212, down 1.69% in 24 hours, even as Pi Network prepares a major Mainnet upgrade for October 16. Pi Network News today therefore carries a split message: a price sliding with the wider market, and a technical milestone with firm dates.
So what is really behind the price drop today?
Pi Network latest news on pricing, per CoinMarketCap data from October 8:

Price: $0.08212, down 1.69% in 24 hours
Market cap: $923.32 million, ranked #68
24-hour volume: $7.82 million, up 1.9%
Fully diluted value: $8.21 billion
Circulating supply: 11.24 billion of 100 billion PI
The Pi coin price moved between about $0.0801 and $0.0838 over the day. Volume equals under 1% of market cap, so thin trading can exaggerate moves.
The cause is mostly macro. Rising oil prices, bond yields, and crypto ETF's outflows along with Middle East tensions, pushed investors out of risk assets, and Bitcoin led the pullback. No PI-specific trigger stood out in the data reviewed. Supply adds a steady backdrop, since about 420 million PI expected to unlock.

Moving ahead, two major events will set the tone $PI as well as for the wider crypto market in the coming weeks:
October 14, September CPI data: inflation readings steer Fed rate decisions, and rate expectations affect how willing they are to hold risky assets like crypto. A higher reading may add pressure, and a lower one may ease it.
November 3, US midterm elections: the result shapes which party controls Congress, and with it the direction of crypto regulation, taxes and wider fiscal policy. Markets often turn cautious before a vote and reprice once the outcome is clear.
Oil, yields and Bitcoin's moves also remain in play. Each can shift risk appetite across crypto.
Pi Network news today centres on some important PI upgrade deadlines too. Testnet already runs version 28, while Mainnet still reads version 27, per official API data. The v28 Mainnet activation is scheduled for October, with specific dates announced for different stages:

Source: Official Node Upgrades Guide
September 21–22: Protocol 27 rollout completed
October 13: node operators must finish upgrading
October 16: Mainnet switches to Protocol 28
Pi runs a customized version of Stellar, and this step follows Stellar's own Protocol 28. It lets:
Validators vote before every transaction detail reaches every node,
allows linked smart contracts to be upgraded in one batch, and
lowers the risk of contracts getting stuck during data edits.
These are back-end tools for developers, not new features for everyday users. Downtime is expected to stay under five minutes. The official table ends at version 28.0, though no Core Team post says development is closed.
The Pi Network ecosystem has moved in steps this year:
January: PiBit Ltd.'s MiCA whitepaper (filed in Oct 2025) was registered by ESMA in January 2025. It could ease access to regulated European exchanges, though final approval is still needed.
May to August: Protocols 23, 25 and 26 added smart contract support, new cryptography tools and better contract security
September: Protocol 27 reached Mainnet and laid groundwork for swaps and liquidity pools
Now: Open USD partnership announced, a Launchpad Tokens section sits on the Mainnet explorer with no tokens listed, and official DEX tools remain in testing
The Core Team is also still working through Pi KYC and migration issues for many users.
PI's price is following the wider market, while the network follows its own upgrade calendar. October 13 and 16 will show whether node operators and Mainnet move cleanly. After that, launchpad tokens and DEX tools must bring real use.
Until usage appears, supply unlocks and macro data will keep setting the tone, and Pi Network News will turn on delivery, not dates. PI is volatile, losses can be total, and this article is not financial advice.
