Zcash Shielded Pool Metrics: Reading Adoption Pre-NU7

Zcash Shielded Pool Metrics Before NU7

What Is Zcash, and How Does Its Privacy Technology Work?

Zcash is a blockchain network made for private payments, and its coin is ZEC. The project went live in 2016. It uses zero-knowledge proofs, which let the network check that a payment is valid without showing the sender or the amount.

This design is why Zcash Shielded Pool Metrics matter, since they show how much ZEC sits in the private part of the network.

Holders choose between two address types. Transparent addresses work like Bitcoin’s public ledger, so anyone can see balances and transfers. Shielded addresses hide the sender, receiver, and amount.

Zcash Shielded Pool Metrics measure how much ZEC sits on the private side. With NU7 planned for around November 5, 2026, these numbers are getting more attention, and they are easy to misread.

What Is the Zcash Shielded Pool?

A shielded pool is a shared bucket of private coins. The pool’s total is public. Who owns what is inside it is not.

Shielded ZEC is not locked. Holders can spend it any time.

Pool

What to know

Sprout

The first shielded pool, from 2016. Mostly legacy now.

Sapling

A later upgrade with faster, lighter private payments.

Orchard

Added in 2022. Held most shielded value for years.

Ironwood

Went live with NU6.3 on July 28, 2026. Built on Orchard’s design.

Old pools keep their coins long after newer ones arrive, so all four count toward the total.

How to Read Zcash Shielded Pool Metrics

Four numbers appear most often: each pool’s balance, the combined shielded total, the shielded share of supply, and transaction counts.

The first three are balances. They show where ZEC sits, not how often it moves.

Shielded share is simple division: ZEC in the shielded pools, divided by the total supply. Change either side and the percentage shifts.

That is why dashboards and crypto blog posts sometimes quote different figures. The date, the supply count, and the pools included all matter.

What Do the Dated Shielded ZEC Snapshots Show?

These figures come from an independent shielded supply tracker that records daily pool balances from the chain. The October 28 reading is at block 3,534,107.

The share fell by about 5.6 points from the spring peak to late July. It then regained 3.6 points over the next 90 days.

Compared with a year ago, the balance is up about 19,420 ZEC, but the share is 1.05 points lower, at 30.19% then. Total supply grew faster than the shielded balance.

These are measured balances. They do not prove demand or price direction.

What Changed After Ironwood Replaced Orchard?

Researchers found a flaw in Orchard’s proof circuit on May 29, 2026. The Orchard security advisory explains it. It also says nobody can check afterward whether the flaw was used, because the pool is shielded.

The official NU6.3 upgrade page confirms Ironwood activated on July 28, 2026. Orchard is now exit-only.

Funds can leave through the turnstile, a rule that stops a pool from paying out more than ever entered it, but no new deposits are allowed.

Moving is voluntary. It happens through updated crypto wallets, so migration depends on user action.

By October 28, Ironwood held 84.14% of all shielded ZEC. Orchard and Sapling together lost about 3.49 million ZEC, while Ironwood gained 4.17 million.

The gap of roughly 680,000 ZEC matches the net rise in the total, which came from outside the shielded pools.

Think of it this way: move 100,000 ZEC between pools, and one balance falls while the other rises. The total stays flat, and no new user appears.

A lower Orchard balance also does not mean every coin went to Ironwood, since ZEC can leave a shielded pool for a transparent address.

Does a Higher Shielded Balance Mean More Adoption?

Not alone. A bigger total can come from transparent coins moving in, from holders who simply prefer privacy, or from both.

Net inflow is a useful sign of shielding activity. It is not proof of new users. Existing holders can shield coins they already own, and one person can control many addresses.

Transaction counts also measure activity, not people. For the wider picture, see these crypto adoption trends.

What Could NU7 Change for Zcash Pool Numbers?

As of October 29, 2026, the NU7 upgrade tracker listed November 5 as an announced date, with the activation height still unconfirmed. The node software release also mentions a shorter block time.

Orchard is already exit-only, so another large pool shift is not the main thing to watch. Block height is.

If block time shrinks, heights will no longer map to dates the same way, so snapshots should be compared by date.

The tracker also notes that some Ironwood technical specs still carry a "draft" label in the public ZIP index.

That is a document status, not a sign the upgrade is inactive. Updates are covered in the latest crypto news.

Expert Take: What Should Readers Watch?

  • The stronger signal: the combined shielded share, not any single pool.

  • The main concern: reading pool migration as new adoption.

  • The biggest unknown: how much Orchard value will never move.

  • What to verify: the date, supply count, and pools included behind each number.

Zcash Shielded Pool Metrics work best as a record of where ZEC sits. Price is a separate question, and crypto price predictions and trading updates cover that side.

Conclusion: What Zcash Shielded Pool Metrics Show

Zcash Shielded Pool Metrics show where private ZEC sits, not why it sits there. About 29.14% of supply was shielded on October 28, yet most of Ironwood’s growth came from Orchard and Sapling.

Before NU7, compare dated snapshots, check each tracker’s method, and confirm upgrade details on official pages.
